“Modern Greek for Beginners – On-line seminar”

Introduction

The Training and Lifelong Learning Center (TLLC) of Democritus University of Thrace (TLLC–DUTH) is organizing an Educational/Training Program entitled: “Modern Greek for Beginners – Online Seminar”, which will take place from October 1, 2025, to February 1, 2026. The Scientific and Academic Coordinator of the program is Associate Professor of Historical Linguistics in the Department of Greek Philology at D.U.Th., Mr. Asimakis Fliatouras.

Aim of the Program

The program aims to instruct participants to the basics of Modern Greek (up to approximately A1 level– depending on the class dynamics and the relative ease of acquiring Greek based on the learner’s native language) in a simple and accessible way, focusing on grammar, vocabulary, and the comprehension and production of both spoken and written language. Alongside learning the language, participants will explore cultural elements derived from linguistic study, the connections between Greek and other languages, and the historical development of the Greek language. By the end of the program, graduates will be able to use Modern Standard Greek at a foundational level and apply this knowledge for academic, research, or professional purposes. The seminar is open to participants worldwide, regardless of their educational background (whether they are high school or university graduates of any level) or professional/academic field. Basic requirements include basic skills in computer and internet use, as well as English language skills at a minimum B2 level. The seminar is delivered entirely online, combining asynchronous (bimonthly self-studying of the syllabus) and synchronous (3-hour teleconference twice a month via MSTeams) learning, and is conducted in English. Synchronous sessions will be offered in two time zones (to accommodate global participants) and/or in two levels, depending on the degree of similarity between Greek and the learner’s native language (e.g., writing system, language family, etc.). All teleconferences will be held on Saturday and Sunday [(your choice between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6 p.m.-9 p.m. (Greek Time Zone)]. Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded a training certificate to enhance their professional profile. The certificate is not an official Greek language proficiency certification. However, participants will have the option to independently take official Greek language proficiency exams if they wish. If you want to register, you only need to submit the necessary files and prepay the fees (see below).

Program Justification

The seminar aims to promote and disseminate the Greek language and Hellenic literacy, to foster linguistic and cultural interaction between Greece and other nations, to enhance the often-overlooked humanities disciplines, and to introduce innovation. Notably, there exists no other Greek language learning program that integrates both diachronic and synchronic teaching with distance education (both synchronous and asynchronous), through a linguistic perspective and the use of modern educational tools (multimodal texts, audiovisual material, gamification, etc.).

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:
(a) understand the structure of Standard Modern Greek, explore the cultural elements that emerge through linguistic analysis, examine the interactions between Greek and other languages (primarily through borrowing), and gain an overview of the historical development of the Greek language.
(b) obtain, upon successful completion, a certificate of training in basic knowledge of Standard Modern Greek, enhancing their CV.
(c) use Modern Greek in accordance with the basic learning objectives of CEFR Level A1 (grammar, vocabulary, oral/written production and comprehension).
(d) apply their knowledge for academic, research, or even professional purposes.

Target Audience

The program is intended for individuals in either of the following categories:
(a) Graduates of secondary schools or universities (any discipline or faculty, from Greece or abroad), as confirmed by the submission of a diploma.
(b) Students at any level (undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers), from any institution in Greece or abroad, as confirmed by a relevant certificate of enrollment.

Eligible Candidates – Prerequisite Knowledge

Applications may be submitted by:
(a) secondary school graduates, upon submission of their diploma;
(b) holders of a university degree from any department or faculty in Greece or abroad, regardless of grade, upon submission of the degree;
(c) students at any academic level (undergraduate, postgraduate, etc.) from any institution in Greece or abroad, upon submission of any official proof of enrollment.

Basic prerequisites for participation include: access to the internet, possession of a personal email address, and basic computer literacy, including familiarity with the e-class platform.

Program Delivery Methodology

The program will be delivered through distance learning, combining both synchronous and asynchronous formats:

(a) Asynchronous learning:
Educational material for self-paced study will be uploaded, including for each biweekly unit: one PDF file of up to 25 slides, videos, activities, indicative bibliography, and audiovisual content (images with commentary, discussion forums, games, thought-provoking prompts, etc.), as well as online exercises and assignments. Total asynchronous instruction time: 200 hours.

(b) Synchronous learning:
Two live, three-hour lectures will be held each month (2 × 3 = 6 hours per month) via MS Teams, for clarification of concepts, consolidation, and explanation of content (6 hours × 4 months = 24 hours).
Live sessions will be offered in two time zones (to accommodate time differences) and/or at two levels, based on the degree of similarity between Greek and participants’ native languages (e.g., writing system, language family, etc.).

Educational Materials / Additional Resources

Participants will be provided with specialized educational materials (PowerPoint presentations, audiovisual resources, etc.).
