Extension of application deadline until 17/02/2026

Since the 1980s, the world has been facing a series of unprecedented environmental challenges, such as pollution, ecosystem degradation, and climate change. These challenges affect biodiversity, human health, and the overall well-being of the planet. Biotechnology provides applications that offer alternative, rapid, and cost-effective solutions compared to traditional methods of environmental restoration. For example, microbial waste degradation can contribute both to the cleanup of contaminated areas and the protection of ecosystems, as well as to enhancing carbon sequestration.

The BIOSHIELD program has been designed to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and competencies of students in the life sciences regarding environmental challenges and biotechnology applications that focus on addressing the impacts of pollution, ecosystem degradation, and climate change.

Specifically, the BIOSHIELD program aims to:

(a) highlight the areas in which biotechnology can offer restoration solutions

(b) enhance collaboration between academia and industry for the development of innovative approaches

(c) cultivate skills and attitudes that connect data with appropriately designed sustainable practices

(d) utilize innovative educational technologies and

(e) prepare students for their future professional careers.
